COAST WOMEN IN DEVELOPMENT - CWID


The report of Dissemination of Kenya AIDS Indicator Survey Chapter 4,5, 6&10 By Coast Women In Development On 25th September 2010 at Pastoral Centre Tudor.
Coast Women In Development is a Non Profit Making Organization that was established in 2005 and registered in 2006, it is a regional organization that works within the Coastal Region of Kenya, to improve the lives of the vulnerable women and children living at the grassroots level and to identify and reinforce women’s role in education, leadership and development as well as improving their health and wellbeing. In a husk CWID has broad objectives of women’s rights.
The forum that brought together 35 participants from different CBO`s , FBO`s and NGO`s started at 9.00a.m and lasted for seven hours and was Facilitated by:-

Betty Sharon propagated on Chapter 6 Sexual Partner, Debut and Circumcision and Chapter 10 on Care and Treatment of Adults Infected with HIV.
While Grace Aketch Propagated on Chapter 4 on HIV Testing and Chapter 5 on Knowledge and Disclosure of HIV Status.
The Participants were taken through the chapters 4, 5, 6 and 10 of the Kenya AIDS Indicator Survey report 2007, the impact of the awareness between 2003 and 2007, key findings, figures and the gaps. Although the study has 15chapters we had opted on the four chapters because of time and funds so if we get more funds we will have to do dissemination of the remaining chapters to the participants to assist them in there work on HIV matters.

Reactions on Knowledge and Disclosure Challenges that couples have to endure with after disclosure.
  • Lack of motivation for HIV infected individuals especially in marriage and cohabitation to disclose their HIV status.
  • Lack of awareness to the community on the benefit of disclosure
  • Fear of stigmatization and in married couples fear of divorce or separation and in some cases violence.
  • Lack of self esteem.
  • Myths


Reaction on Sexual Partners , Sexual Debut and Circumcision.


  • Culture tend to make men have more sexual partners and ignore the fact of HIV reality
  • Inadequate access to affordable better female condoms hinders women from making decision to their sexual lives hence lower condom use in married or cohabiting couples.
  • Lack of female condom awareness.
  • Internet and Media programmes contribute a lot to early sexual debut

Reaction, Care and Treatment of Adult with HIV.
  • The elders are a forgotten constituency when it comes to awareness creation.
  • Lack of awareness creation on Cotrimaxazole and its results on the prevention of certain bacteria and parasitic infections and how it assists to prolong the lives of children and adults who are HIV+.
  • Ignorance.
  • Fear of stigmatization on ARV intake.
  • Lack of access to ARV, Cortrimaxazole and CD4 count Test.
  • CD4 count test not affordable.




Way Forward:
  • Mobilise more grants from different Organizations.
  • Train more Tots (School drop outs)
  • Engage drug addicts in the awareness creation.
  • Awareness in public schools, hotel industries and the community as a whole.
  • Kenya AIDS indicator Survey study should cover up to the age of 80yrs
  • Advocacy for CD4 Cells Count Test should be made accessible and affordable to the grass root persons with HIV
  • Advocacy on the access to affordable better female condoms.
  • Dissemination of the Kenya AIDS Indicators Survey 2007 remaining chapters to the participants.
